My journey into family photography started with a simple fascination: the way real moments often happen in between the “planned” ones. I wasn’t drawn to stiff portraits or overly staged images. I was drawn to the in-between—kids laughing while no one is posing, parents exchanging a quick look when they think no one is watching, grandparents holding hands without being asked. Over time, that fascination turned into a full-time craft, and today it defines everything I do.

I’m based on Oahu, and the island itself has shaped my approach to family photography more than anything else. The light here changes quickly, the ocean is unpredictable, and every beach has its own personality. Working in this environment has taught me to stay flexible, patient, and present. Instead of trying to control every detail, I’ve learned to work with what’s happening in the moment—because often, that’s where the best images come from.

When people book me for family photography, they’re not just booking a photographer—they’re booking an experience. My goal is to create a session that feels relaxed, natural, and even fun. I don’t expect families to know how to pose or behave in front of a camera. In fact, I prefer when they don’t think about the camera at all. I guide gently with movement, conversation, and simple prompts that allow people to interact naturally with each other.

A big part of my philosophy in family photography is understanding energy. Every family has a different dynamic. Some are outgoing and playful, others are more reserved and quiet. Some children warm up immediately, while others need time to observe. Instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all approach, I adjust my direction in real time based on what I see. This adaptability is what allows me to consistently capture authentic expressions rather than forced smiles.

Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of families visiting Hawaii from all over the world, as well as local families celebrating milestones right here on the island. One thing I’ve learned through all these sessions is that family photography is deeply emotional. It’s not just about how people look—it’s about how they feel in that specific chapter of life. A family with young children has a completely different energy than a family with teenagers or a multi-generational group gathering for a reunion. My role is to honor that stage, not overwrite it with artificial posing.

Preparation is also an important part of my process. Before every family photography session, I help clients choose the right location based on their comfort level, privacy preference, and lighting conditions. Some families want iconic Hawaiian backdrops like Waikiki Beach at sunset, while others prefer quieter, more intimate settings like Ko Olina lagoons or the North Shore. The location plays a huge role in the overall feel of the images, so I always guide families toward places that match their personality and vision.

I also provide guidance on wardrobe styling, which is often overlooked in family photography. Clothing choices can dramatically impact the final look of the images. I typically recommend soft, neutral tones that complement Hawaii’s natural environment without distracting from the emotions in the frame. Coordinated outfits—not matching uniforms—help create visual harmony while still allowing each person’s individuality to show.

During sessions, I focus heavily on movement and interaction. Standing still and smiling at a camera rarely produces meaningful results in family photography. Instead, I might ask families to walk together along the shoreline, play games with their kids, or simply talk to each other as they normally would. These small moments create genuine expressions that cannot be manufactured through posing alone.

One of the most rewarding aspects of family photography for me is working with children. Kids bring unpredictability, honesty, and energy to every session. I never try to suppress that. Instead, I embrace it. If a child wants to run, I let them run. If they want to explore, I follow their curiosity with my camera. Some of the best images happen when children forget they are being photographed entirely. My approach is always to build trust first, then capture moments second.

For larger groups, organization becomes key. Group family photography sessions require structure to ensure everyone is included while still keeping the experience efficient and enjoyable. I typically start with full-group portraits and then break down into smaller combinations—siblings, couples, grandparents with grandchildren, and candid interactions. This approach ensures the final gallery tells a complete story of relationships within the family, not just a single group image.

Another core part of my work in family photography is understanding light. Hawaii offers some of the most beautiful natural lighting in the world, especially during golden hour. However, light conditions can change quickly depending on weather, clouds, and location. Over time, I’ve learned to adapt instantly—adjusting angles, positioning families in relation to the sun, and using shadows creatively when needed. This technical understanding allows me to maintain consistency while still working in a very natural, outdoor environment.

Editing is where everything comes together. My style of family photography editing is natural, clean, and timeless. I avoid heavy filters or trendy color grading that may look outdated in a few years. Instead, I focus on enhancing what was already captured—balancing light, refining tones, and ensuring skin looks natural while preserving authenticity. The goal is for families to look back at their images decades later and still feel like they represent who they truly were in that moment.

What sets my approach to family photography apart is the emphasis on storytelling. I don’t just aim for one perfect shot. I aim to create a full narrative of the session. A gallery should feel like a collection of memories, not just individual portraits. When families receive their photos, I want them to relive the experience—the laughter, the movement, the quiet moments, and the connections in between.

Trust is also a huge part of my work. Most people are not used to being in front of a professional camera, and that can feel intimidating at first. My job in family photography is to remove that pressure completely. I keep things light, conversational, and easy. Within the first 10 to 15 minutes, most families forget about the camera entirely, which is when the most genuine moments begin to unfold.

I also understand that every family has different comfort levels when it comes to posing, physical interaction, and emotional expression. Some are very affectionate and expressive, while others are more reserved. My approach to family photography respects those boundaries while still gently encouraging connection. Nothing is forced, and everything is guided in a way that feels natural to the people involved.

At its core, my work is about preservation. Family photography is not just a service—it’s a way of freezing time. Children grow, relationships evolve, and life moves quickly. Having professional images that capture a specific stage in that journey becomes more meaningful as the years pass. I often hear from clients months or years later about how much more valuable their photos became over time, and that is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

My goal moving forward is to continue refining this craft and creating experiences that feel effortless, meaningful, and real. Every session is an opportunity to tell a new story, and every family brings something different to the table. That variety is what keeps me inspired and constantly improving.

At the end of the day, family photography for me is about connection. Not just between the people in front of the camera, but also between the photographer and the family. When there is trust, comfort, and presence, the images take care of themselves.
